Hate against Asian Americans, explained

Since COVID-19 there has been a dramatic increase in the amount of hate and violence directed toward the Asian American community.

The reasons are vast. In the U.S. there has been a long history of discrimination and violence directed toward immigrant groups. In the 1800 and 1900s East Asians experienced what we call today Yellow Peril. South Asians also experienced similar treatment in what is known as Dusky Peril. From then until now, the struggle for justice, safety, and peace has been a journey with many ups and downs and continues to this day.

In this video I explore the history of racism toward Asians and Asian Americans from the 1800s to Civil Rights, and from 9/11 to the present day. I speak with two experts and several Asian American residents of Oakland, California.
