In the 1980s, Yakov Smirnoff turned being the Soviet guy in America into one of the most recognizable acts in comedy. Who is Yakov Smirnoff?

Smirnoff was born in Odessa and came to the United States in the late 1970s with almost no English. He built a career on the collision between Soviet life and American excess, delivered in a catchphrase-ready style ("What a country!") that made him a regular on TV and in movies. The inverted "In Soviet Russia…" joke format that still circulates online traces back to his act.

When the Cold War ended and the premise seemed to go with it, he didn't fade out. He moved to Branson and built a long-running live show at the Yakov Theatre, earned a doctorate, turned to visual art, and launched the "Comedy Couch" podcast. He's currently back on the road touring the U.S.
