Resilience in the Aftermath of Disaster with Laurie Nadel

Laurie Nadel, PhD, a clinical psychologist, is author of The Five Gifts: Discovering Hope, Healing, and Strength When Disaster Strikes. Her other books include Sixth Sense: Unlocking Your Ultimate Mind Power, Happiness Genes: Unlocking the Potential Hidden in Your DNA, and Dancing With The Wind: A True Story of Zen and the Art of Windsurfing. Here she describes her experiences living through chronic fatigue syndrome and the Epstein-Barr virus, the 9/11 disaster in New York City, and Hurricane Sandy — which destroyed the home in which she was living. In the horrible aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, she followed her own clinical advice and took a two-day respite in order to meditate and focus inwardly. It was then that she received the guidance of the “five gifts” of humility, patience, empathy, forgiveness, and growth.

He is a past vice-president of the Association for Humanistic Psychology; and is the recipient of the Pathfinder Award from that Association for his contributions to the field of human consciousness exploration.
