In this chapter, Terence McKenna reflects on his time in Nepal during 1969, detailing his interest in the indigenous shamanistic tradition of Bön, a pre-Buddhist religion in Tibet. McKenna sought to explore how hallucinogenic plants influenced Tibetan painting and culture. He was particularly fascinated by the vibrant imagery in Tibetan art, which he believed stemmed from ancient shamanistic practices involving hallucinogens, like Amanita muscaria and Peganum harmala.
Upon arriving in Kathmandu, McKenna dedicated himself to learning the Tibetan language, distancing himself from the distractions of the international traveller community. He found lodging in Boudanath, a village populated by Tibetan refugees, and began studying under Tashi Gyaltsen Lama, immersing himself in the language and local culture.
During this period, McKenna became friends with an English couple who shared an interest in hallucinogens, particularly LSD. As summer solstice approached, they planned to experiment with hallucinogens on the roof of McKenna's building in Boudanath. Due to the scarcity of LSD, McKenna whimsically suggested using Datura seeds instead, which are known for their unpredictable effects.
On the night of the experiment, after consuming Datura and LSD, McKenna experienced intense visions, leading to a surreal and intimate encounter with his female friend amidst a psychedelic atmosphere.
