Ruth-Inge Heinze is author of Trance and Healing in Southeast Asia Today and Shamans of the Twentieth Century. She describes shamans as experts in the use of altered states of consciousness and sacred rituals in the service of their communities. She discusses her fieldwork with over a hundred shamans in both urban and rural settings.
