What Makes SEAL Team 6 So Deadly?

In this Hot Question, former DEVGRU operator Alex West recounts Operation NEDMAC, a mission in Afghanistan where his team used an empty helicopter as a decoy to draw roughly 30 Taliban fighters out of a compound and into an ambush. While clearing trenches and bunkers, West slipped while escaping after throwing a live grenade and began sliding into the bunker with it rolling against his shin. He managed to crawl out moments before it exploded.

After years of combat, including serving on Operation Neptune Spear and losing close friends throughout the Global War on Terror, West’s own mental health began to collapse. He eventually pursued treatment and took an unexpected path after the SEAL Teams: becoming a therapist himself. Today, he works with trauma patients while helping veterans and first responders confront the same struggles he once faced.
